5 Signs You Might Need a Root Canal - Don't Ignore These

“Severe toothache? Sensitivity that lingers? These could be warning signs your tooth is infected. Learn the 5 signs that mean you need to see Dr. Rohan Kamble immediately.”
What Happens When a Tooth Gets Infected?
Inside every tooth is a small chamber filled with soft tissue called the pulp. The pulp contains blood vessels and nerves. When bacteria penetrate through a crack, deep cavity, or damaged restoration, they can infect this pulp. Left untreated, the infection can spread to the surrounding bone, cause an abscess, and eventually threaten both the tooth and your general health.
A root canal treatment removes this infected pulp, cleans and seals the canal, and saves your natural tooth. At Uttam Microdentistry in Dombivli, our microscope-guided root canals are gentle, precise, and usually completed in a single visit. But the key is catching the infection early. Here are the five warning signs to watch for.
Sign 1: Persistent, Severe Toothache
A mild, occasional twinge after eating ice cream is normal sensitivity. What is not normal is a deep, throbbing ache that does not go away - especially one that wakes you up at night or makes it impossible to concentrate during the day. This type of persistent pain is a classic sign of pulp inflammation or infection. Do not mask it with painkillers and hope it resolves. It almost never does on its own.
Sign 2: Prolonged Sensitivity to Heat or Cold
Healthy teeth might feel a brief, sharp zing from cold food or hot drinks. This sensation should disappear in 1-2 seconds. If the sensitivity lingers for 10, 20, or 30 seconds after you remove the stimulus, the nerve inside your tooth is likely damaged. Lingering sensitivity to heat in particular is a strong indicator of irreversible pulpitis - the stage just before a full infection.
Sign 3: Darkening or Discolouration of a Tooth
When the pulp inside a tooth dies, the blood vessels break down and the degrading tissue can cause the tooth to darken from the inside. If you notice a single tooth gradually turning grey, brown, or darker than its neighbours, this is a sign the nerve is no longer healthy. This often happens painlessly, which is why many people miss it. A darkened tooth that has not been injured should always be evaluated with a dental X-ray.
Sign 4: Swelling, Tenderness, or a Pimple on Your Gum
A small, raised pimple or bump on the gum near a painful tooth is called a sinus tract or dental fistula. It is the body creating a drainage pathway for the pus inside an abscess. The area may be tender or swollen. You might also feel a general swelling in your jaw or lymph nodes in your neck. This is a dental emergency - the infection can spread quickly and must be treated immediately.
Sign 5: Pain When Biting Down or Touching the Tooth
If chewing or even the lightest touch on a specific tooth causes sharp pain, the ligament surrounding the root of that tooth is likely inflamed due to spreading infection. This sensitivity to pressure is different from general tooth pain and is usually a sign that the infection has moved beyond the pulp into the surrounding tissue.
